By Paul Simons
and Lyndall Eeg
Foreword by Lindsay Fox AC
Seaman, Retailer, Woolgrower
Born in Wales, Paul spent his early childhood years amidst the rigours of the Great Depression. As a thirteen year old, educated in Dover, Paul’s experiences of WWII were visceral. A career in the British Merchant Navy took him to all corners of the globe.
Settling in Australia, he took a job at the bottom of the rung of Woolworths, rising through the ranks to become perhaps its most successful CEO. When retirement should have beckoned, a third career as a Superfine Merino woolgrower has occupied Paul to the present day.
A great Australian, a proud Welshman, Paul’s story is a remarkable one.

“Paul Simons is a genuine phenomenon. He is a charming, unassuming person, who is also a captain of industry. Nothing in his background prepared him for this, which might seem to be serendipity, being by accident in the right place and at the right time. But this account of his life shows that when an opportunity presented itself, he had the courage and self-assurance to take it and do whatever he had to do. He also has a genuine gift for friendship, which stood him in good stead over the years, as this biography makes very clear.”
